Shortly after graduating college, my wife’s Mercury Sable died in a grocery store parking lot, and thanks to some nagging electrical gremlins, she decided to jump to something new.
Her next car, a 2012 Ford Focus, was a quick fix solution to our one car (my Fiesta ST) problem. Unfortunately, the Focus had even MORE issues (seriously, the worst car we’ve ever owned), which left us in a tricky position: how did we get rid of the Focus without the liability of selling a lemon?
We had thrown around the idea of picking up an Outback or Forester eventually, and actually test drove them both months before we were ready to dump the Focus. We had decided that an Outback would be the perfect car for her!
While we had the best intentions of driving the Focus into the ground, winter was rapidly approaching, and we both felt it was a liability we just didn’t want to tolerate any longer. So we explored our options and ended up sourcing a super clean 2017 Outback Premium through CarMax.
Over six years, we enjoyed many many miles behind the wheel of the Outback! I ended up “inheriting” it, and daily drove it for about a year after we traded in my Legacy XT for a bigger family vehicle.
While the Outback was a great car, it really wasn’t much fun to drive. I was really missing my WRX, and ultimately jumped on the perfect Golf R that popped up for sale locally. So, with a heavy heart, we traded in the Outback to CarMax for the Golf.
Parting ways with the Outback was truly bittersweet, because it had become like a member of our family. It was an extremely capable and reliable family hauler, and was with us through so many major life events. It truly was one of my favorite cars I’ve ever owned!
